Projects - SmartWorks 2000

(Circa 2000) SmartWorks is a complete Microsoft Active Server Page (ASP), Back Office IIS web server, SQL Server 7.0 based system for handling very large number of manuscripts within a web based environment. It is designed to be scalable, extensible, reliable, RDB based and with functional links to production systems within the publisher's house.

Scalable - Up to 1000 terabyte of data can be stored with unlimited number of accounts and manuscripts
Extensible - Because distributed databases and code are supported, the servers can be moved to separate hardware. Journal islands using SmartWorks 2000 can be connected together in common production workflows.
Reliable - Windows NT protects against memory partition crashes. Microsoft SQL Server is very reliable. The web server can autostart after faults.
Relational DB - transitioned from an object database in SmartWorks to relational database technology. Ad hoc queries and transactions are supported.
Links to production - HTML and PDF files are created automatically from source files. The server will generate structured datasets if the source file is well formed.

The technologies used in SmartWorks 2000 are:

Windows NT - provides strong preemptive multitasking, multithreading and memory partition protection.
Back Office - integrates IIS as the web server, uses the index server and the transaction server
SQL Server - strong relational database with 1000 terabyte capacity, distributed, ad hoc queries, callable from ASP pages using ADO and VB, and has structured schema
Active Server Pages - provides a versatile mechanism for the creation of dynamic HTML pages. Forms look better and the interaction is smoother. Any Web browser can be used with SmartWorks 2000.
Visual Basic Script - runs on the server side only and provides the intelligence and glue that holds all of the components together.
JavaScript - runs on the client side only and unlike Visual Basic, will support all modern Web browsers. Used for the non-HTML controls. SmartWorks 2000 code tested on mac and Windows IE and NN.
COM and ADO - Object technologies in the lower laters of the SmartWorks 2000 server that provides connections to the database and other object components. COM supports VB, C++. Java and Smalltalk.
OLE Automation - reuse other technology as commercial applications. Time to deliver is decreased and use of commercial applications such as Office 2000 increases off-the-shelf flexibility.
- Server-side OLE automation supports the translation to HTML and PDFs. PDFs have watermarks in the background for copyright issues.
- Server-side OLE automation also supports intelligent figure formatting of figure source files to Web-ready JPEG and GIF formats.

Because text and image formatting is automatic, real time rendering is suported furing the submission process. Authors can verify the integrity of the document before committing the manuscript to editorial submission.

The main users of SmartWorks 2000 are:

Submitters - The Submitter is used by an author to assemble and send manuscripts in for review using a Web browser. It is important to note that the browser must support file transfer using RFC 1867.
Reviewers - The Reviewer module is used for editorial peer review using a Web browser client. Reviewers of the manuscript to enter comments, evaluations, and commentaries on the manuscript. Reviewers are not compensated for their reviews therefor the user interface for this module must be as inviting and simple to use as possible.
Editors - Using a Web browser client, Editors and staff members of a journal assign, notify and examine reviewer comments and act upon manuscripts.
Administrators - Using a Web browser client, a system administrator remotely maintains the entire system.

	Manuscript Submission - Navigation is easier with a navigation sidebar. The author follows a straightforward, task-oriented, step-by-step set of instructions to send the manuscript files, meta-data, and other information that is needed to conduct an electronic review.
	Watermarks - can be stamped on the PDF files to discourage the use of SmartWorks as a free PDF service and to protect the ownership rights.
	Data Files - Data files are easily managed from a file list.
	Data Files - Fan also be converted to browser-supported JPEGs and GIFs for reviewers, and thumbnails for article rendering and stored the database.
	Data Files - Scaling and intensity adjustments available on all images.

	Desktop Views - When a person signs into SmartWorks, a desktop is presented that represents all of the roles, work, and responsibilities that are entrusted to that user. A summary of the work is presented.
	Audit Trails - Nearly all events are recorded in SmartWorks. A full history is always available to the editorial or publishing staff for any manuscript. All communications (email, messages, etc.) are recorded and stored for each manuscript.
